DAIRY HEIFERS MANAGEMENT

Managing and feeding dairy heifers properly is critical for their growth, reproductive performance, and future milk production. Here’s a practical guide to help you out:

  1. Management by Age Group

a. Birth to Weaning (0–8 weeks)

Colostrum: Feed 3–4 L within the first 2 hours of birth.

Milk/Milk replacer: Feed 2–3 times daily.

Water: Provide clean, fresh water from day 1.

Starter Feed: Introduce high-quality calf starter by day 3–5.

Weaning: Wean when calf eats ~1.5–2 kg of starter for 3 consecutive days.

b. Post-Weaning to 6 Months

Ration: High-quality forage + calf grower feed.

Monitor weight: Aim for ~0.7–0.8 kg daily gain.

Grouping: Group similar-size calves to reduce competition.

c. 6–12 Months

Diet: Good quality forage + grain or TMR (total mixed ration).

Deworming: Based on veterinary guidance.

Body condition: Avoid over-conditioning.

d. 12 Months to Breeding (13–15 Months)

Target weight: ~55–60% of expected mature weight before breeding.

Reproductive check: Ensure good reproductive health before breeding.

e. Pregnant Heifers (15–24 Months)

Nutrition: Increase energy and protein slightly as calving nears.

Minerals: Ensure proper calcium, phosphorus, and trace minerals.

Exercise: Allow movement to prevent calving problems.
